I once viewed a movie taken from a camera mounted on the mast of a
helicopter and continuously focused on one blade. The blade flaps up and
down, bends in the middle, leads and lags its nominal position, changes
pitch, twists within its length and even develops standing waves at certain
speeds. The thing was basically doing the frug, the watusi, the boogaloo,
and the funky chicken all at the same time. See this flick and you'll never

want to get in a helo again.

Shortly thereafter while I was on Naval Reserve cruise at Barber's Point,
HI, an Sikorsky S-58 crashed in Chicago due to blade failier. They
immediately grounded our SH-34J helos (same airframe as the S-58) and
magnifluxed all their blades. Sure enough, they found several with serious
fatique cracks. Like you say, "looking for a place to self destruct".
