Those things came out long after I'd studied physics!  So I have a lot  
to learn.

I got some Hall Effect sensor modules from a friend not long ago  They  
are not clamp-on things but do seem to have a hole through which a  
wire might be going. I'll dig them out soon if possible.. but do look  
at this website.. this is the place that made what I have:

I have no idea if the gadgets I have are applicable to our application  
or not.  The current probes on the HP instrument (I happen to have one  
in storage) are small to be useful in wired electronic things such as  
boatanchors.

Yes. I got one at Harbor freight (15 bucks) but it has no battery and  
they can't send me a battery!  I"ll pay more for two batteries than I  
did for the whole instrument.. hand held thing for measuring my  
electrical panel currents.
