I found references to what you are looking for, I think, in my notes
files (I was looking for the article about the modified 1625 tubes.)
(I don't know what "FTBO" means.. do you?)

Ray -

QST for March 1956 has an article "Cheap and Easy SSB", by Anthony
Vitale, W2EWL on a mobile SSB transmitter converted from a BC-458.
This article is mostly about the SSB conversion, using the set of
transformers that he offered for $7.95. This circuit was originally
published in GE Ham News for November-December 1950. I believe he was
credited with the "invention" of the 9 MHz phasing SSB generator with
a 5 MHz VFO for 75 and 20M coverage. I also seem to recall that this
circuit was what was later sold as the 10A transmitter by Central
Electronics.

In this article, however, he mentions his "current" mobile rig which
uses this exciter with one of the 1625 finals removed, to drive a
single 837 which drives four G-G 837's in the trunk! There are no
other references, typical of QST in those days, a result of the NIH
(Not Invented Here) policy!

FBTO comes up with no less than three 837 based linear amps, of three,
four or five tubes!

"Four 837 Tube Linear", CQ Magazine, June 1966, pp. 28

"Table Top Linear using Five 837", CQ Magazine, January 1959, pp. 50

"Three 837 Tube 1 KW Linear", CQ Magazine, February 1956, pp. 26.
