BC-348 showed-up in a lot of places other than aircraft.
The Signal Corps even issued an official modification,
with Sig Corps part number (Power Supply No. 205-490),
to change them to 115 VAC.
After the war (as before), the defense budget was cut
drastically. People used whatever they could get to
do the job. The more information I gather on this,
the more it appears that, once any system left the factory
or depot environment, or the first time it needed
major repair, "by the book" installations became
the exceptions. Good for us, since it allows us
to maintain authenticity without futile, expensive grubbing
for near-extinct items. The group that's insisting on
a BC-375 "C" model for their B-29, because that's what's
called-out in their early erection manual, and the eternal
search by the Navy jeep guys for the complete TCS-9
(not -12, not -5; gotta be -9) come to mind.
