The Chain Home system used a net of primitive RADARS around the East and
South of England.

The real genius was in the data collection. Air Marshall Dowding had all
the sites (and visual observers) linked to central operations rooms. The
sightings could be plotted (as seen in so many old war movies) and the
Senior officers could direct the defense.

The Germans never figured out the system and while they tried to bomb the
RADAR sites, they never went after the relatively unprotected operations
rooms that were the heart of the system.
