I haven't seen them that cheap lately. The prices have been going up; unfortunately I believe the audiophiles have discovered them.

As for being cheaper than a jfet? In the late 1960's I used to buy lots of surplus and parts in the remaining stores in downtown Manhattan. Leeds Radio had Motorola MPF-102 jfets on sale for fifty cents. I still have them; they have gold plated leads. I still have my Barry Electronics and G&G Surplus Radio catalogs from that era; I'll check out the prices for 1626 tubes and see if they were cheaper.

Does anyone remember Leeds? Check out the movie "The Anderson Tapes". A young Christopher Walken played an electronics expert; they have a scene with him shot in Leeds.

I never paid more than $3 for 1625's at hamfests, typically 2 for $5 .
