Very enlightening discussion, gentlemen!
It would appear that some 283's made it overseas, based on the pictures in the Guadalcanal book, but I have seen a lot of evidence of 283's surviving the war in training aircraft. I saw a Cessna UC-78 that was going to be restored in the mid-70's and it still had the 283 set installed. At least one of the F4F's they hauled out of the great lakes in the 90's apparently had a 283, based on the tubes they showed that came out of the radio. A friend of mine bought a surplus F4F after the war and based on his description of the radio in it having a changeable coil set I assume that it was a 283 also.
I have wondered what the Douglas TBD torpedo bombers at Midway had for equipment. VT-8 left their radiomen on the carrier because the commander figured it would be a one way trip. And one reason it was one way was because the escorting F4F's never got the radio call to come join the battle.
As for who made what, I have an ATA transmitter, 5.3 to 7 MHZ made by Stromberg Carlson with a contract date of 5 Feb 1942.
Finally, as to coating coils, a few years ago I went into the local Big Lots and found they were selling spray cans of Krylon Red Insulating Varnish for 89 cents. I'm using it for the coils I am building for the dynamotor filters for my BC-348's and BC-224. I guess I should have bought all they had!
