There was a semi endless thread a few weeks ago on some list on how to
make it. I know it was styrene (like packing peanuts) dissolved in
toluene, as I remember.

The reason to use shellac is that it dries completely w/in an hour or two.
Spar varnish takes several days before recoats from my days messing w/
wooden boats. It's a chemical polymerization. Shellac is just solvent
evaporation.
