The conversion article I have is from a June 1967 73 magazine and uses a U-112 FET and two bipolars. I have a Command Set transmitter that some barbarian removed everything but the osc coil and cap I picked up at the TRW swap and that has caused me to daydream about building a CW transceiver using it as a basis. At least the philistine who raped that cute little set did not cut it down to 3 inches long as the article suggests.
I did put an MPF-102 or something like that in place of the 957 of an APR-4 tuning unit and it did oscillate quite nicely, fairly stable even without buttoning it up, too. No luck with trying that with an LM freq meter, though.
As for Mr Tauson, I have immense respect for his work. I bought a copy of his book from Fair Radio in the early 90's for $5.00 and sold it for $41.00 on ebay a few years ago. Okay, so I have $36.00 worth of respect for his work.
