During WW II, the airlines were obligated to fly as transports over
and above what the services had on inventory in addition to their own
scheduled flights, and sometimes in place of them in cases of
scheduling conflicts. Immediately after the war, they had access to
surplus stock as it was released so took advantage of that to augment
what they already had. This receiver most likely came from one of
those two periods. Since it was rebuilt as a ground receiver (hence
the ac power supply), cooling would be a problem since the Type K
equipment was designed to be operated at altitude which provided its
own cooling, not only from the ambient air temperature but from air
that blew on them from whatever source.

The fact that it has a CAA type certificate leads me to believe that
the receivers were being shop converted, either at the factory but
more likely at an outside facility, for aircraft use but at least this
one wound up in a ground environment.

Something more to check out if I can make my trip to DC. *sigh* ...
will it NEVER end? ;-)

Best regards,
