Those have been modified by....possibly the U.S. Navy...for 
the Yardney Spot Tuner, which (I think) was called the 
Control Box C-131.

Mike Hanz's site, www.aafradio.org, has a document 
describing it.

The trouble is that the fellow who is selling them (he says 
he has 12 of them NIB) thinks that the small dial under the 
lid for the remote control box IS the dial for the receiver, 
and all one has to do is to remove the aluminum plate from 
the front of the receiver and install that.

He is not willing to take correction from anyone who knows 
better either, although I tried.  A waste of time.
