[ARC5] BC-454 silver & black

I picked up an unmodified silver BC-454-B recently.  There were some
screws missing so at first I figured the black wrinkle front drawer
and tube cover was probably due to a swap with another unit.  But this
receiver came with its matching box so now I'm thinking maybe it was
configured that way.  Can anybody shed some light on this oddly
dressed BC-454-B?  The maker is Western Electric and the nomen plate
reads serial 22169.

Another question relates to the capacitors.  Two of the cans have
actually split open along the full length of their sides, I presume
due to internal swelling.  I have never seen this phenomena in a
bathtub cap.  Is it uncommon?
