The "final edition" manual for the RU-3/GF-1 states that the RU-3 utilized
eleven coil sets CBY-47065 through CBY-47075 to cover 224 through 13575 KC.
It also lists only one coil set CBY-47064 for the GF-1, to cover 6200 through
7700 KC.
The discrepancy most likely results from the description of the set in a
"preliminary" edition of the manual.
For example, I have both preliminary (early) and final versions of the RU-16/GF-11
instruction books, and also the radio sets that accompanied them. The early version
manual *and hardware* omit GF-11 coverage of 4525 to 6000 KC. The later version
manual *and hardware* include coverage of that range.
It's all part of what makes the RU/GF series one of the most intricate and confusing
radio systems to describe in its many versions, and one of the reasons that I'm trying
summarize available key info in a small table. I would like to include in that table
such variations of detail of early and final versions of each system, when they can be
verified, as I did for the RU-16/GF-11 entry.
The same can be said by the visually similar, related, but often rather electrically
different SCR-A*-183 and SCR-A*-283 sets, which beg for the creation of a similar
table of info. Perhaps I'll start one, but I only have manuals for a few of those
systems. To make matters worse for filling in blanks, there's less cross-reference
to compatibility with earlier units in each manual than is typicaly found in RU/GF
manuals.
I've also received a note saying that the table format is appearing bizarre in some
email presentations. In that case, go to the list archives at www.milsurplus.net
and look up the message of interest to see how the table should look if your mail
program didn't try to do fancy stuff handling html and/or proportional fonts, none of
which are used in the original posting.
