tsk tsk

All the hand rubbing over how to match the trusty command set
transmitter is interesting. All I can rely on from a purely "Ham Radio Make It Work On
The Air" is to recount the performance of an old pal's 75 meter exploits
during the early 60s from his swampy QTH in Eureka California where he ruled 75
Meter phone in the North West with a simple command set transmitter with a
pair of 6L6s modulating the 1625s in the command set and yes, he broke all the
rules by adding a few turns of stationary link to the existing rotating link,
he also had the padder plate tuning cap stubbed out to the side of the unit
on a knob to ensure resonance and this rascal fed an inverted V dipole cut
for the center of the phone band. And with this modest little transmitter there
were very few stations, regardless of power, who could compete with old
Gerry, WA6MKC.

While this observation is anecdotal at best, he and probably hundreds of
others, perhaps more, were unaware that they were breaking the rules, but
knew from experimenting and modifying the rig that it would load up to a couple
hundred ma at dip and get out. And of course that was the objective at the
time. Gerry was not trying to duplicate a B-17 liaison radio, he was merely
trying to get on the air with an affordable transmitter. In those days hams
saw using command sets out of necessity rather than preserving them as some
iconic relic from WWII.
