Actually, putting a decent black oxide film on brass is relatively easy
if you are a bit handy with simple chemistry. Often eBay has the needed
chemicals with little hassle. A HS chem teacher might help too.
Also, there are commercial brass blackning products. See:

They might be convinced to send you an ounce to try it out. That would
do a lot of screws.
