On slight adjustment...the letters were assigned at 30 degree intervals.

It was a clever and useful system, which pre-dated WWII.  The last maintenance manual revision for the AN/ARR-2 that I know of is dated 1 MAY 54, so apparently the system saw usage into the mid-1950s at least.
