Jack,

I have one as well.  The A-58 belongs to SCR-193.  Like the phantom antennas 
supplied with several of the other ground vehicular sets, it was apparently 
intended to allow retuning the transmitter on a different channel without 
actually radiating a significant signal.  However, as few of them have surfaced, I 
would presume that it was not installed in vehicles like for example the A-62 
was.  Maybe each Battalion had one or something like that.
