There are many imperfectly-known aspects to the employment of radio
in WW II, but I do know Aircraft Radio Corp. sent engineers to England
to deal with the problem of mis-tuned equipment and that the
"stabilized" receivers were an outgrowth of that trip. I do not know
whether they were used in fighters or bombers or just what. Maybe what
they found in Eighth AF usage was never translated into Air Corps
equipment and was just coincidentally incorporated into USN AN/ARC-5. I
have no evidence that it was incorporated into any SCR-274-N HF units.
My comment about using the gear to 40,000 feet was just sort of a
figure of speech, backed up the the P-51-D specs.
