You may be right about the OA-4 although I have seen a number, years
ago. I think I had half a dozen I gave to NASM in about 1983. I have
seen AN/ARC-5 installations in P-51-D mockups, including some non-VHF
units, but I have no personal knowledge of the actual combat complement.
Unfortunately, Jerry is no longer with us.
As to altitude limits, if you read the detailed books on the Rolls
Royce Merlin, such as "Allied Aircraft Piston Engines of WW II" you can
see how much better supercharged they were than the Allison, an engine
designed by a committee. The Allison, however, made a great Gold Cup
speedboat engine, at zero altitude. I have seen them in dragsters and
tractor pulls, too.
