My wife, whose late husband not only shot down seven German planes in 
1944 while flying Mustangs, but was later general manager of Cavalier 
Aircraft, in Sarasota, which re-manufactured P-51s, tells me, and  
"Encyclopedia of World Aircraft" confirms, (p. 703) that the P-51-D was 
rated at 437 mph with a service ceiling of 41,900 feet. The original, 
Allison-powered P-51- -A and -B had a ceiling of about 33,000 feet but 
the Merlin version was good to better than 40,000.
