I found the following in the Users Manual for the V-1
Through a contact on the counter the transmitter is activated approx 60 Km before the V-1 is forced to dive.
At the same time the 140 meter long trailing antenna was reeled out. The transmitter was ready after approx 30 seconds.
The counter ( K1 ) is part of the propeller assembly. The transmitter has no other function than for DF-ing.
It is amazing what a complex test and preparation procedure the personal had to go through for a disposable device like this.
It must have taken hours to get the V-1 ready for the start.
Only some of the V-1's had a transmitter. The manual did not indicate how many.
The designations for the subassemblies are
A - electrical distribution
F - Transmitter
K - Navigation
S - Ignition/ detonation
After the V-1 was setup for the direction of travel the body and wings where beat with wooden hammers to calibrate the compass.
The manual indicates at least 200 hits.
