Hello Dennis, Steve, William and all,
Yes, it is the Colling's B-17 and B-24 that have radios installed but they
are not operational. I can understand why they aren't operational as these
aircraft are used for tours and rides. They have thousands of people crawl
through these aircraft each year while they are on tour. Can you imagine how
long a set of operable radios would last on one of these aircraft? All of
the equipment inside the bombers certainly takes a lot of abuse so I would
not want something I donated to get hammered by the public in one of the
tour aircraft.
The A-36 and other aircraft in their collection are different in my eyes.
The A-36 is an early Mustang which is rare all by itself but consider this;
What is more rare is the fact that this Mustang could have a second seat
behind the pilot as most all other Mustangs do. The second seat location in
this aircraft is right where the SCR-274N set is located. They want this
aircraft to be as original as possible hence the radios instead of an
additional seat. They are even making cloth covered wire in an original
braid pattern correct for the era! To me this kind of effort is to be
applauded and encouraged. I can report that this kind of attention to detail
is on the rise as I see more of it showing up at the various events that I
judge at. It is these very details, and hundreds of others, that will make
the difference for a winning aircraft in heavy competition. More importantly
this kind of authenticity is a tribute to the radio operators, armorers,
ground crew as well as all of the other folks that have been afforded little
space in the history books.
I love helping folks like this go the extra mile. How refreshing to see more
and more stock restorations where these details make all the difference in
my book.
Gary sent me some excerpts from the A-36 manual and the Apache had either
the SCR-522 or the SCR-274N installed along with the SCR-695. My research
says that the particular radio set was predicated by theatre of operations
where the aircraft was assigned. They are restoring this aircraft to
represent one in North Africa and then the Mediterranean theatre so the 274N
seems appropriate.
I think these folks are deserving of our help and donations. I hope you all
don't mind me asking you all for your help. I would like to continue to
bring worthy projects like this one to your attention as I come across them.
Thanks,
Taigh

Gotta ask the question here, are there any plans for ever actually operating
any of the sought after equipment? My understanding is that the radio
restorations in the B-24, B-17 and B-25 aircraft mentioned in the references
are not
operable and there is no interest in making them such. Apologize if I have
the wrong group here and/or have been misinformed.
