You could build a decent enough converter with just one tube, like a
12BE6.  Given the noise on 80 and 40m these days, I don't think you
would miss the extra sensitivity of an RF stage. Gain is not the
problem; there is plenty available in the 453.  With a little planning
you should be able to fit such a circuit on the back porch even if you
decided to build a small power supply there too.
