The BFO is fed from B+ via high value resistors in series, and it
was kept in the shut off state when not required by shorting to
ground the low-potential side of one of the resistors in the chain.
I don't have resistor values or their configuration specifically for
the BC-453.
After long use doing nothing but dissipating heat, one or more of
the resistors in the chain may go high-value, leading to Dennis's
observation.
