Yeah, and as a ground radio maintenance troop,
I annotated many write-ups turned in by the
air traffic controllers as "VBH" meaning vacuum
between headsets. Of course, there was a
specific code which basically meant the same.

.....IMO, pilots likely have little patience when in the air and HF
propagation can
be variable, so they would immediately start cranking on the remote if a
reply
was not forthcoming. Trying to renet would be difficult at best.

Oh Lawdy Me!!!! The same can be said for back seat weapons officers in F4
Phantoms. I worked nights at a rework flight test facility on F4B/N aircraft
in the '70s. The adjustments for the radar indicators were available to what
ever sat in the back seat and the worst thing going was a test flier with a
5/16 socket and itty bitty screwdriver. Sometimes they could turn an
imagined glitch into a major alignment. The trouble ticket/job order was
usually signed off as "loose nut on hand control".
