Dave,
I'd guess, in that time period, that the screws are probably BA (short
for
British Association), not Metric. Anything 1/4" diameter or larger is
probably
BW or BSF, except on specialty items like panel bushings maybe, which as
in US
practice might be of finer thread than the diameter would indicate. And
the
screw heads you're referring to might be Fillester. [snip]
More likely "Cheese Head" as in cheddar (not Wisconsin (?) football)

BA stuff is readily available in the UK. I just got a set of BA sockets
(1/4" drive), a set box spanners, and a set of open end spanners on
Friday by mail.
