If he wants to value it at more than $500 he  is going to need an 
appraisal by an "accredited" appraiser. (See IRS form 8283 - you can 
download it off the IRS web site.) I am an appraiser for antique racing 
cars. As I wrote that surplus column, I suppose I could pass as an 
appraiser for old radios, but it would take a lot of research to come up 
with "comparables." I really do not want to get into that kind of item. 
He might see what similar items have sold on e-bay. Or look up 
appraisers of "personal property" among the American Association of 
Appraisers.
