[ARC5] R-23 Volume BFO/Volume control Question

I have one of these that has the standard drop-in box mod on the front face w/a switched BFO/volume pot and a couple of phone tip jacks.

The existing pot jams everything into the last 1/8 of a turn and makes it hard to listen w/o blasting. What's a good value pot w/an audio taper for this application?

Also, is there a way to tinker w/the BFO pitch w/o hacking up the receiver?

I plan to use this w/a TCS-8 Receiver to improve selectivity. If I listen to SSB do I use the BFO on the TCS or the R-23? That's why I wonder about altering the BFO pitch on the R-23.
