Lest any think I'm rude (I'm really not ... at least I
think I'm not. Hmmm ... something to ponder.), both
Gordon Eliot White and Dean Billing's messages also
wound up in my in box so I replied via email. Boiling
down to the Reader's Digest form, part of the new book
will cover the human elements of the history as well
as the techie stuff which we know and love so much.
I'll be borrowing heavily from Gordon and Dean (well,
from Boonton, NJ's site which I got via Dean's site)
and some added information on flying airmail which is
actually where this all began.
Parallel with that, I'm working on the lists in the
original book and am giving some consideration to
dropping back and including the SCR-183/-283 and RU/GF
sets as well since they pretty much set the stage for
the Command sets. This is in line with the widened
vision of the new book.
Which reminds me, I have a picture (somewhere) of
Command sets in use in a tower in England (along with
an SCR-522) during the war which lead me wonder if
they were mounted in ground vehicles as well. Ahs
anyone seen any reference to such an installation?
I have another related question. In some aircraft,
the wire antennas were attached to a short mast where
the leadin connected the radios to the antenna. These
appear to have only been something like two feet tall
but I've been unable to find any sort of designator
for them if, in fact, they had one. Does anyone have
any information on this?
Also, the manual search mentioned originally should
have included the RU/GF equipment but I forgot. (The
DZ-2 manual is because I may be acquiring one.)
Best regards,
Michael, K3MXO
