So what is the alternative, John? What would you suggest? Never let
them see the light of day because of what *might* happen to them?
Maybe you could preserve things this way for a few more decades, but
what happens when we're gone and no one else cares because they never
saw the gear and have no connection as a result? Far worse than the
possibility of some pieces getting modified, for sure.

The folks who converted and may still want to convert them are almost
exclusively hams. They already know what they are and how to find them
on ebay, at hamfests, or elsewhere. If they want to find, procure, and
convert one now, they will. Denying the rest of the world the
opportunity for such an experience won't change that. Just ask the
re-enactors who gut out other gear and install CB radios.

My only regret is that I don't have more time to devote to the
activities that Dave has shown here and spoke of last year. Other than
the occasional radio club meeting or other local displays, I haven't
had the chance to share these wonderful pieces of history with others
as much as I'd like to. This is the key to their survival and
preservation in the future: new blood, be they young or old.
