Sorry, Dennis.  I have no useful suggestions for your situation.  But it reminds me of the problem of trying to reseat the three little glass bearings that position the stator of the large variable caps in the SCR-274/ARC-5 transmitters.

A couple of years ago I got two pristine ARC-5 transmitters...each perfect except for the sound of some loose parts rattling around under the chassis.  Yes, on each transmitter about half of the glass bearings had been jarred out of their seats.  

It is non-trivial to remove these capacitors for repair, but I found that I could leave the capacitors in place, and just replace two out of three bearings, then use stiff wire wrapped around one stator terminal to pull back on the stator assembly enough to allow me to place the third bearing back on its seat.
