There is the same problem on aluminum racing cars. 3006 aluminum, I 
believe, is used on cars. I don't have my metals handbook near me, but 
that's what I recall. I have seen unpainted cars that simply shine like 
mirrors. Nothing but a lot of hard work. Cars are of  60/1000s sheet, a 
lot thicker than the covers of the Command Sets .I think you can sand 
through the metal of the radios before it will shine.
Best thing is that kept dry, the shine on a car body will last for quite 
a while.  I have spent hours polishing real magnesium wheels to a shine, 
which goes dull in three days. (Aftermarket "mag" wheels are of a 
different, heavier alloy than those used on racing cars.)
