Interesting!  I never heard of such a unit until Jay described one, nor read of one in any of several versions of SCR-*-183 manual.  Are the units that you know about documented in the "normal" issue of the set manual, or is it documented in some type of later addendum to the manual?  Was there an earlier version of the C-184 or C-182 coil that was not crystal-equiped?  

It almost sounds like an ad hoc alteration of some sort, like the crystal-controlled (!) RT-91/ARC-2 that I came across 30 years ago.
