Odd.  The SCR-*-183/283 sets used no crystals.

The only in-aircraft photos of the SCR-183/283 that I can recall seeing were of the panels and interiors of captured Japanese aircraft that were being evaluated by the USAAF.   Evidently in such aircraft the SCR-183/283 was good enough.  I've also seen photos of a captured German nightfighter that still retained the German radar gear, but had an SCR-274-N added.
