As to tooob audio. I have an old Dyna ST-70 that I use on my Quad
ESL-57 electrostatic speakers, mainly to keep the power under some limit to
keep
from zapping them. Good sound, but not sure why..
To some extent, I think audio quality is in the ear of the beholder. Every
day, I hear (deafing) boomers in cars rattling the chrome and the windows,
and they think it sounds great (I think it's a nuisance!). I used to have a
good ear for audio, but at 50+, alas, no more...a 6" woofer sounds as good as a
15"!
I used to work on a lot of tube amps...their dynamic response was so
superior to solid state that I was generally afraid to turn a 30 watt unit up over
halfway, even though my speakers were rated 100Wrms (they could take my
75W/channel solid state unit all day).
What I can't figure out though, is why the old 50's and 60's songs sound
best over an old car radio with a 5 x 7 or 6 x 9 speaker, even to this day!
I know, kinda far off topic, but I'm glat to see folk are still fooling
around with tubes (Just got an Allied A-2516 Ham band unit I can't wait to fire
up). I use a BC-946 for AM BCB listening in my office.
