Ian,

That's why the antenna relay unit (RE-2/ARC-5. BC-442-A, etc.) has a fixed 
vacuum capacitor mounted under the bottom of it.

And BTW, BC-442-AM is so marked (with the "M") because it has had that 
capacitor and its mounting plates removed.  The manual explains what to do about it 
but doesn't explain why they did it.
