And speaking as the pickee, actually I've read somewhere and am trying to
remember where that it started off being SCR-274N, where "N" stood for "Navy"
rather than Model or Order -N. Later it shows up as Model -N, although there
were never any earlier ones.

And to counter-pick Young William, there were no BC-454's built, only
BC-454-A and BC-454-B (and to further confuse the French, the -B came in black
wrinkle and aluminum finish). Other than color the differences between the -A and
-B would likely only matter to a collector looking for something specific.
However, I can quote many instances where the model letter that lazy people
(which is just about everyone) drop are critical. R-390/URR versus R-390A/URR.
AN-29 or AN-29-B versus AN-29-C. BC-223 versus BC-223-A versus BC-223-AX.
SCR-188 versus SCR-188-A. ARC-1 versus AN/ARC-1. A.R.C. Type 12 versus
AN/ARC-12. Etc.
