Now that the BC640/BC639 subject has come up again, it is time for a little 
history on these radios.  In 1939? an American tried to sell the Navy and 
Signal Corp on the idea of going to VHF.  Both said that their HF was good 
enough.  This American went to England and sold the idea to the Brits which 
could see the advantage of VHF over HF in the British Isles.  The American 
( do not remember his name) sold the designs for his VHF TX and RX to the 
Brits.  When WW2 started, the Brits Licenced the building of the BC-640 and 
BC-639 to the US.  This is the reason that most of the BC-640/BC-639 
equipment has the royal seal on the name tag.
