I was an engineering officer on a submarine that was being overhauled in 1977. After a couple of Chinese above ground nuclear weapons tests that year, we had for a couple of weeks to put on partial anti-contamination gear before entering the reactor compartment. This wasn't to protect us from picking up contamination from the reactor plant, but rather to prevent our contaminating the reactor plant with the Chinese fallout on this side of the world that we would be carrying on our normal clothing and shoes.
