In WW-2's beginning, Army Air Corps thumbed it's nose @ SigCorps & ordered
HF Jefferson-Travis 350 "xcvrs."

This apparrently because ground-based SCR-187 such a crew-intensive
woolly booger - 11 men req'd to install & operate BC-191, 342, RA-34, PE-75,
the antenna/counterpoise, 'n stuff

Apparrently JT episode hastened the distribution of self-contained '299, etc.
Report from North Africa was that Spits used E1152(?) VHF forerunner of '522
and 1st Mustangs had same. NO HF to fighters at time of Kaserine Pass.

Fighter airbases, near front, just used '187s to talk among themselves then.

'rm... who finds theory 'whatever worked' best
