[ARC5] 520-1500 ARC-5 receiver: BC-946 or CBY-46145 ?

One of my friends (who sometimes monitors the ARC-5 list) has a broadcast band ARC-5 receiver. It is painted in black crinkle and is sadly missing the cover - which has the nomenclature tag. It is not an R-24, it has no circle "S" over the sline and it has an 12SK7 in the second IF position. It was actually manufactured by ARC - their stamp is on the rear chassis. So, what is it - BC-946 or CBY-46145 ? Since the BC-946 was a late comer to the game, were any of them painted black? Are there any other distinguishing features we might have missed? (If there were NO black BC-946's, then it must be a CBY-46145?)
