Hi Jack,

What you did is almost exactly the same as what I have 
done - except, I gripped my capacitors in a lathe chuck 
and parted off the terminal end with a very fine parting-
off tool just below the flange. On re-assembly, I too 
soldered the flange back to the rest of the body using 
a plumbers wiping technique that makes it almost 
impossible to distinguish from the original.

Takes a fair old bit of time if you're only doing one at a 
time - OK if you have a dozen to do.

BTW, same experience with Sprague!
