Well, it's a kind of "trade-off."
The SCR-274N would be fine on 40 AM, but it's only 14 watts out.
That will work if people cooperate, but then....
I've hand-picked MO and PA tubes, plus really worked-over the
TU-8 tuning drawer for the SCR-287, and now it only drifts
down about one KC during transmission on 7 MC AM, instead of
the usual two or three. The more I thought about a whole bunch
of guys complaining about the drift, the more I liked 75 meters.
Moreover, more people work AM on 75 and we'd hoped to work
more military gear, which would also have been on 75.
Next time, I think we'll have multiple time slots with
different bands, a better plan for shifting freq
away from QRM and pick a weekend without
some "Lower Poedunk QSO Party" going on- if there *is* one ;-).
