I've not followed all this thread in detail, but would like to make two points.

There were a lot of articles in QST and the Surplus Perversion Books covering
mods to ARC-5s. They may be a help in reverse engineering what was done to your
poor set.

The original manuals are available as .pdfs and they often have wiring drawings
which would be handy, IMO. I previously posted one site, Trackpads. Please email
me if you need it.
