That's correct; the RATs and RAVs cured them of
"serial number fever."
When the RAT and RAT-1 were produced,
each major componant was part of a serialized group
of that componant. For instance: Set #1 of RAT
would have 13-20 receiver #1 and 20-27 receiver #1,
but the two dynamotors would be serialized #1 and #2.
Same with the aux drawers on the front of the radios-
13-20 receiver #1 would have box #1 and dyno #1,
but 20-27 receiver #1 would have box #2 and dyno #2.
They would be in rack #1.
Second set would have:
13-20 Rx #2
Dyno and drawer #3
20-27 Rx #2
Dyno and drawer #4
both mounted in rack #2.
As you can imagine, this mess gets confusing
if you want to match things up. In fact, I have
an RAT receiver #3 with drawer #3 in it, but that
isn't the "correct" drawer; it should have drawer #5.
Drawer #3 goes into 13-20 Rx #2, but I'm betting
the confusion started right after delivery of
the first ten sets to the Navy for evaluation
and is how both these #3s got together.
I've found no indication that they paid attention
to matching serial numbers after WECo's 1509-NY-41
production run. The next run had a place to
stamp a serial on the shell of the FT-260 drawer,
but I've never seen one stamped. Later runs
dispense with serializing them altogether.
