At first I thought this was a BC-946, but on closer inspection noted that it
was labelled a CCT-46145.
It would not play, and my initial diagnosis was there was a break in the
filament line. So traced it all out only to find that the filament supply
lines were all ok, and that the filaments were getting the voltage needed.
Next I checked the B+ line and found that I was getting zero B+ in the
radio. Further troubleshooting reveals that B+ is coming into the radio,
but the B+ line inside the radio has almost a dead short to ground. I
figure it has to be C-16, which based on my limited experience was often the
culprit. Not so. In this radio the bad cap was C-20. I found this by
unscrewing C-20 and letting it "float" from its wiring in the chassis -- and
in a way so that it is not touching anything. Bingo. The radio starts
playing, and there is happiness in the land of ARC-5 listening. This is a
very sensitive radio and it plays like a champ.
My question is, even though the radio is playing well after removal and
replacement of C-20, should I go ahead and replace all the other "bathtub"
caps? What has been your experience? Your thoughts?
thanks,
