Line-of-sight radio range at 33,000 feet approaches 200
miles if TX power and RX sensitivity are good enough.
That's what SAC expected from Command Post to
B-52 when I was an EWO.

I certainly support David's last post. VHF was very important, but not long
enough range for long-range missions. Having flown as a civilian pilot in
the U.S. and overseas, until quite recently even passenger jets had HF
radios. May still. You can't communicate much past line-of-sight with VHF,
even though at 33,000 feet LOS is a fair piece.
