Underside does look like a standard fil mod, easily fixed.

The tank coil appears to be a "transplanted" 7 MC coil.
At least one of the MO cover screws is missing,
so I agree that it's likely the MO coil is gone, too.
Pity- why didn't the doofuss just get a 7 MC rig?
The set couldn't have functioned satisfactorily on 7 MC.
This is a prime example of the folly of major modification.
I have a T-15 here (a gift from someone much kinder
to me than I deserve), and that set's first owner
tried to "up" it by removing turns from the tank
and the MO coil.
It didn't work, of course, so all he did was turn
a valuable radio into a hanger queen.
I'm more intrigued by the black nomenclature tag on that T-16.
I have an R-27 that also has an original black tag.
Officially, a black tag denotes a 12-volt version.
But this rig and my R-27 are both 28 volt.
Wonder if it's as simple as running out of
blue paint?
