[ARC5] arc5 as antenna tuner

Well, I knew I couldn't have been the only one! I also used the stripped =
chassis, but left the caps intact and replaced the standard tuning knob =
with a cranker. Also mounted a coax connector to the right of the =
antenna terminal for easy I/O connection. Didn't mind the wasted-air =
packaging, since narrow and deep suited most of my temporary locations.
Also had the same problem with grounding in an apartment. I was on the =
12th (top) floor, the cold-water tap for a ground connection, and tapped =
into the balcony railing for the antenna. The only band I could tune up =
on decently was 15 meters, and had to wear gloves to touch the rig, the =
tuner, and the key! But it worked. And sometimes in this hobby, that's =
all that matters.

I used this arrangement for many years when I was in the service and
traveling alot. I used it to match a Galaxy V MkII with a 50-ohm output =
to
a 135' Windom made out of WD-1 commo wire, nominally about 600-ohms. Two
cautions: The 'dip' point with this setup is very sharp and will take
awhile for you to find; and you will need a very good ground.

Interesting, because I used an ARC-5 tuner with a 300 watt Galaxy III. I
wired the roller and one variable cap as an L-match to tune random =
single
wire antennas. The chassis I used had been stripped clean, so I just put
the roller in its proper place but remounted the cap, without worm gear
drive, below chassis so that a shaft extension came out through the =
front.
They were connected with a ceramic feedthrough bushing that also served =
as
the ant connection point.=20
Never had a good ground, often being in a dorm or apartment building, so =
I
occasionally had RF in the shack for certain antenna lengths. A
counterpoise can help with that though. It was a bit tedious finding the
settings for each new location.
