Not an ARC-5 but of the era, I've worked on several TCS receivers.
Sometimes there was noise that increased with RX signal strength but was
still a present frying crackel even at low/no inputs ( input grounded ). It
was the micas in the RF and OSC stages connecting stages to the tuning cap.
Don't have schemo with me to ID the parts but replacing the caps cured the
noise. Sorry Dave, all I had in needed value was silver micas.
